Israel desires to “be like other nations” with the installment of a king to rule & reign. This is no decision made in light of the past failures of the judges however. Their desire is simple: reject God & all he’s done to reclaim authority over their lives. They believe they know better, can do better, and will be better off…

 

God anticipates this, establishes governing laws/principles, but even the perfect king would be unfit for the qualifications. No king would truly be able lead them to be a kingdom set apart.

 

This leads all of us to Jesus—the perfect & sovereign King. Our invitation is to deny ourselves, lean in & trust in Christ, and allow Him to rule in all aspects of our life.
